SUNGAI PETANI: FAST GROWING CITY OF MALAYSIA
Initially, the name of this town derived from a river name which is Sungai Petani, a
tributary of Sungai Merbok. In the past, the tributary was known as
Sungai Bertanding, presumably because the river stream was equivalent or
parallel with another Sungai Merbok tributary. The distance between
those two tributaries was about 60 metres.
The ‘Petani' name may be relating to the Pattani district in Thailand.
Pattani was derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Pathini' which means ‘pure
woman'. ‘Pathini' was a title given to the Merong Maha Wangsa princess, a
princess who was said to be good-looking and well-mannered. The
princess was appointed as the queen who was respected by the residents.
When Kedah was known as Langkasuka, traders often commute between Lembah Merbok and Pattani as well as the eastern part of the Peninsula by road. Therefore, it is not impossible that the name Petani name was borrowed from the revered queen's title.
Now, Sungai Petani (also known as Sg. Petani or
"SP") is an industrial city in the Kedah state that is located in the
northern of Peninsular Malaysia. Sungai Petani is the second biggest
city in Kedah after Alor Setar.
The housing sector developed
rapidly in Sungai Petani. Since the 1990s, Sungai Petani received large
investments by housing developers. Taman Ria, Taman Ria Jaya, Taman
Peruda, Taman Mutiara Indah, Taman Berlian are some of the earliest
planned housing estates in Sungai Petani. By 1999 until 2007, several
new cities were developed, among them are Bandar Aman Jaya, Bandar
Mutiara, Bandar Puteri Jaya, Bandar Sri Astana, Bandar Sri Cendana,
Legenda Heights, Bandar Laguna Merbok, Bandar Puteri Hill Park and Cinta
Sayang Resort.
Sungai Petani city can easily be reached by the
road networks, railroads and the airways. From the capital city, Kuala
Lumpur, the journey to the north to Sungai Petani can be made via the
North-South Highway. The Federal road also connects Sungai Petani with
several other main cities such as Alor Setar, Butterworth and Ipoh.
However, the journey on the North-South Highway is faster and more
comfortable.
If you are traveling with the train, you can get
off at the Sungai Petani railway station that is located in the city
center. The railway starts in Padang Besar, Perlis and passes through
cities like Alor Setar, Gurun, Sungai Petani, Bukit Mertajam,
Butterwoth, Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh, Slim River, Tanjung Malim,
Sungai Buloh and Kuala Lumpur. There is a direct trip from Kuala Lumpur,
Bangkok and Hatyai through Sungai Petani.
The closet airport to
Sungai Petani is the Bayan Lepas International Airport in Penang, which
is approximately 45 km from the city center. There is also another
airport in Alor Setar for domestic flights, which is the Sultan Abdul
Halim Airport.

Nasi Lemak Cinta Sayang @ Sungai Petani
Review By: http://samlee86.net
Just another Malaysia food blog
Nasi Lemak stalls are everywhere, as almost anyone who can
cook can simply set up a small stall by the road. Basically no set up
cost is needed, since one can use their house dining table for the
stall, plates for putting the dishes, and most important, usually just a
few dish will suffice. However, it’s very rare that these types of
stall will success as usually they won’t have enough business and hence
enough revenue to cover their cost of cooking materials. I don’t know if
it’s because their cooking sucks, or did they think that it’s really so
easy to simply just set up 1 stall in front of their house and expect
customers to fly in.
HOWEVER, there is this 1 stall, just outside Cinta Sayang Golf & Country resort, whose business is really growing rapidly. Initially, they are also just another nasi lemak stall by the road side, but their business boom in just 1 year ++ and from just 1 more stall, it became something like this.

Amazingly, all their workers are also wearing uniforms! How professional! Besides uniform, this nasi lemak stall is clean too especially if you compare to their competitors. Well, sometimes I do think, referring them as a stall might be a bit underestimating them, but it’s ain’t a restaurant either.

Anyway, 1 of the reasons their business is growing so fast is because their food is good, and cheap. There are also many choices for you to choose from, as you can either just opt for the normal nasi lemak (just rice, gravy, ikan bilis and kacang), or you can add more dish such as curry chicken, beef rendang, lamb, curry prawns, fried chicken and many others.

There are loads of people flocking here for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Well, they open from early in the morning from 7 am to almost 8 pm in the night (when they start business they only sell for breakfast), and I rarely see them have a off day besides Hari Raya Puasa! However, I only come here for breakfast before, so no comment for their dishes during lunch and dinner time.
Besides, your timing must be good too if you were to come here for breakfast. Coming too early the choice of dishes will be limited as they are still cooking, come too late the dishes are finish. Around 8 to 9 am is the best time to visit here.

All I can say is, most of the dish here is nice, both the curry and rice are very fragrant, very nice. Seriously, just eating the normal nasi lemak is good already, with all the extra dishes, really yum yum!! 7.5/10
Total Damage: Around RM8 for 2 rice above and 2 drinks
Operating Hours: 7AM to 8PM
Location: Jalan Kelab Cinta Sayang, Sungai Petani, Kedah

We opted for their jug Sugar Cane drink (Tek
Chia) ~ RM12.00

Mae Salong Thai Restaurant ~ Sg.Petani's Little Hidden Treasure
Review By: http://thatslife-lynho.blogspot.com
That's Life
My
sister-in-law took me to this place sometime early last year. I was amazed that
our small town had such a quaint well landscaped restaurant serving such
delicious Thai cuisine. This place
totally slipped my mind until a few weeks back when someone from Kuala Lumpur mentioned
that people recommended them Mae Salong, and I was like “Wow!! This place is so
famous” & I just had to give it another try.
Known
to be packed especially during the evening on weekends, we decided to have an
early lunch so as to be able to view their lovely surroundings. Stepping through the gates brings you into a
totally different world. Beautiful
landscaped gardens with flowing water all around as you dine in their air-conditioned
room or if you prefer dine in their natural environment by just taking a few
steps upstairs.
Being
the first patron of the day, food was served within half an hour. The
down side is that no Menu was available so it’s advisable to browse through
their website for their Menu beforehand so as to roughly know what you would
like to order or you could ask them to recommend you their house speciality. You can even
check out blogs on recommendations.
So
while waiting for our food to be served we walked around the place a bit for
photos.
Their
beautiful landscaped gardens
My
favourite was their ‘one-of-a kind’ wash basin.
Their
unique interior design.
Then
comes the FOOD!!
Ikan bilis
& peanuts fried with curry leaves & dried chillies as starters(RM2.00)
The Main course
Steamed kepah with garlic, ginger,
salted vegetable & chillies ~ good sour & hot combination (RM15.00)
Pucuk Paku with sambal belacan ~
requested it to be made not too hot which turned out to be nice as we can really taste the delicasy of the dish (RM8.00)
My favourite ~ Mantis prawns fried
with salted eggs (recommended) but it was a really small portion for RM20.00
Another of my favourite ~ their
own made Fried Tofu (RM10.00)
Seafood Otak-Otak ~ spicy &
flavourful (RM16.00)
Dont miss their Rojak (RM8.00)
Enjoying our scrumptious lunch =)
The only Menu ~ the dessert menu
One final shot before leaving =)
Definately will be back for more
!!
Mae
Salong is easily accessible from the Western Bypass, you cannot miss this place
after turning into the junction towards SMK Tunku Ismail as there will
signboards all the way leading you to the restaurant.
